Today, we dedicated the newly-renovated auditorium at J.H. Phillips Academy in honor of Civil Rights icon Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth.
In Sept. 1957, Rev. Shuttlesworth and his wife Ruby took their two daughters to enroll at Phillips High School, which was then an all-white school. An angry mob assaulted Rev. Shuttleworth, with his wife and daughter Ruby sustaining injuries in the melee.
Ruby Shuttlesworth Bester and Patricia Shuttlesworth Massengill, the two daughters of Rev. Shuttlesworth, received inaugural Waymaker Awards for their contributions to Phillips Academy and delivered remarks during the ceremony.
