RtI stands for Response to Intervention. Response to Intervention (RtI) aims to identify struggling students early on and give them the support they need to thrive in school. The word intervention is key in understanding the purpose of RtI. The goal is for the school to intervene, or step in, and start helping before a student falls really far behind. 

Teachers can provide targeted teaching — called interventions — to help struggling students catch up. A big part of the RtI process involves closely monitoring student progress. Schools can then see which students need more academic support.

RtI isn’t a specific program or type of teaching. It’s a proactive approach- RtI measures students’ skills and uses this data to decide which interventions to use.

MTSS stands for multi-tiered system of supports. Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a framework that helps educators provide academic and behavioral strategies for students with various needs.

MTSS is designed to help schools identify struggling students early and intervene quickly. It focuses on the “whole child.” That means it supports academic growth, but many other areas, too. These include, but are not limited to, behavior, social and emotional needs, and chronic absenteeism (not attending school).

RtI responds to the need for intervention and support. MTSS offers tiered levels of support. The levels of support are determined by the varying needs of the students.
