My name is Melba Johnson Shanks . I am a native of Birmingham, Alabama. I received my formal education in the Birmingham City Schools. I am a graduate of Wenonah High School Class of 1994. I received a Minority Teachers Scholarship to the University of Montevallo. I received my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education in 1998.

I obtained my Masters Degree from Alabama State University in 2000. I have over 21 years of counseling experience, 6 years agency setting and 15 years in a school setting. I received my National Board Professional Teaching Standards Certification in 2012.

I am married to George Shanks Sr . We have been married for 17 years and have a 14 year old son George Shanks Jr.

My earthly spiritual connection is with Grace Fellowship Church in Hueytown, Alabama were I serve as a deaconess and on the LRJ usher board ministry. As a counselor, I feel that everyone has feelings and should be allowed to express their feelings and emotions in a healthy manner. I strive daily to meet the clients where they are and develop realistic attainable goals to a healthy lifestyle. I feel that I am a visionary and all things are possible if we put forth our best effort.
