For these reasons students learn rules regarding the ethical use of computers, how to take care of the equipment and to use their own personal log-on for accessing computer programs. Teachers lead classes in discussions of appropriate and discussions on how technology is used for communication (i.e. news, e-mail, chat, etc.) and research.
Jackson-Olin students are taught to understand the ethical, cultural, and social issues related to technology and thereby practice responsible use of technology system.They discuss legal and ethical behaviors. Teachers, and students are required to sign The Birmingham City Schools District’s 7300 and 7305 Policy regarding the Acceptable Use Policy for the computer before using school computers. This policy is an agreement that guides the responsible use of our students, teachers, and parents when they are on the Internet and while they are selecting materials from different websites (copyright laws). Skills for avoiding copyright violations, unethical behaviors regarding the use of technology and the proper method for citing electronic sources are introduced in all classes.
