Green Acres Middle School was originally designed as an elementary school serving the needs of the community students in grades K-8. However, in 1989, under the administration of Dr. Cleveland Hammonds, Jr., Superintendent of the Birmingham Public School System, Green Acres Middle School was established and organized as a result of a study produced by the Blue Ribbon Comprehensive Needs Assessment Committee in an effort to fully serve the needs of the middle level learner. Special emphasis was placed on the transient child. The developmental aspects as well as the academic aspects were built into the total curriculum.

In addition to the organizational structure, the newly formed Green Acres Middle School brought many changes. The school, which is located in a residential area in the southwestern section of Birmingham, serves three feeder schools from five adjacent communities: Green Acres, Vinesville, Central Park, West End, and Belview Heights. These communities range from a low socio-economic level to an upper middle socio-economic level.

Green Acres Middle School presently serves 300 students. The racial makeup is 99.5% African American. Eighty percent (99%) of the total student body qualifies for free or reduced meals.

The principal, assistant principal, certified teachers and other personnel work closely with parents on a daily basis.
