Norwood School opened in 1929 and is located in a commercialized urban area in the northern section of Birmingham, AL, adjacent to Interstate 65.  Norwood is a Title I School with an enrollment of 244 students in grades Pre K -5. The current population of Norwood is approximately 95% African American.  Approximately 98% of the students participate in the free/reduced lunch program. Norwood also provides special education services to students who are Intellectually Disabled, Developmentally Delayed, Speech/Language Impaired, Emotionally Disturbed, those with Specific Learning Disabilities, the Gifted, and assistance for students qualifying for 504 services.

Norwood Elementary School provides a curriculum based on the State of Alabama's Course of Study as well as district pacing guides.  Students attend daily for 8:00 - 3:00 for 180 days. All students receive instruction in physical education, library media, and guidance.  We use a school-wide behavior plan based on the Positive Behavior Support Initiative.

Additional programs offered at Norwood include Academic Bowl, Math Derby, Spelling Bee, Better Basics, Family (Girl and Boy) Scouts, Growing Kings Mentoring Program, BETA Club, and NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers).  Additional programs such as Readers on the Move Book Club, Pre K and Kindergarten Waterford Language Arts & Math, Space OneEleven Art Program, Watershed through the Water Works Board, and the Birmingham Museum of Art.  A tutorial program is available to assist students needing additional intervention through the Title I program.  Another partnership with KBR provides our students with school supplies. We also have a "Character Counts!" and Bully Free Prevention Program.
